Senior Tax Work-Off

WHAT IS A SENIOR TAX WORK-OFF?

Greenfield homeowners age 60+ may apply to work off a portion of your real estate taxes by working at a city department (not at a non-profit or other agency). You may earn up to $2,000 off your real estate taxes (based upon hours worked at minimum wage). You must have lived in Greenfield for at least five years and in Massachusetts for at least ten years. Your name must be on the title of the property for which you are applying.
You must apply each year you wish to participate. Work hours must be for a city of Greenfield department.

Pease note upcoming changes in the program timing:
For Fiscal Year 2025, hours may be earned on or after July 1, 2024 through November 30, 2024 depending on your placement and schedule.
For Fiscal Year 2026, hours may be earned on or after January 1, 2025 through October 31, 2025 depending on your placement and schedule.

Senior tax work-off is NOT a tax exemption. You may still apply for any exemption for which you are entitled.
You can read about other possible exemptions here.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Applications for Fiscal Year 2025 senior tax work-off will be available at the John Zon Senior Center Front Desk (35 Pleasant St.) by May 1, 2024. Completed applications and placement interviews will be accepted by appointment through May 31, at 3:30 p.m.

Applications for Fiscal Year 2026 senior tax work-off will be available at the start of September 2024. Completed applications and placement interviews will be accepted by appointment through some time the last week of September.

Up to 20 people will be accepted each year. If more than 20 people apply who meet the program qualifications, a lottery will be held immediately after the close of each application period.
