Community Preservation Committee
WHAT WE DO
The Massachusetts Community Preservation Act allows municipalities to adopt a property tax surcharge of up to 3%, the revenues from which are matched by state funds. The purpose of the Act is to fund community preservation projects and initiatives in the areas of community housing, historic preservation, open space conservation, and outdoor recreation. Greenfield citizens adopted the Community Preservation Act in 2020 with a local surcharge of 1 %.

MEETING SCHEDULE
The committee holds a hybrid meeting on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the City Hall Meeting Room, Room 203, 14 Court Sq., Greenfield, MA 01301 and via Zoom. Please check the calendar for scheduled meeting information, including agendas and Zoom links.

The Community Preservation Committee is annually tasked with:
- Studying the needs, possibilities, and resources of the City.
- Consulting with municipal boards including the Conservation Commission, the Historical Commission, the Planning Board, the Recreation Commission, and the Housing Authority.
- Holding public hearings on the needs, possibilities, and resources of the City regarding community preservation.
- Making recommendations for the use of Massachusetts Community Preservation Act resources collected through that Act in allowable categories: community housing, historic preservation, open space, and outdoor recreation.
- Sending recommendations to the City Council for appropriation.
