Mayor's Biography

Mayor Virginia "Ginny" Desorgher was sworn into office for a four-year term on January 2, 2024. In addition to her mayoral duties, she currently serves on the School Committee as a full member as designated by the City Charter. In 2002, the voters of Greenfield enacted a charter change establishing a city form of governance and replacing the board of selectmen with a mayor and city council. Virginia is the fourth mayor following the former mayors Christine Forgey, William Martin and Roxann Wedegartner.

Virginia strongly believes Greenfield's best days are ahead and that the city features the commitment, creativity, and unity needed to make this a community everyone can be proud of and thrive in. Like many, Virginia believes we make our best decisions when we make them together – it's what makes any community shine brightly.

Greenfield has been Virginia's home for over a decade. She chose it in part because of the economically diverse, hard-working people who live here. Virginia has come to know many folks here through the numerous ways she's served Greenfield since moving here.

Throughout her entire career, Virginia has been inspired by helping people – as an emergency room charge nurse, as a City Councilor, and as your Mayor of Greenfield – because she recognizes our people are our most valuable asset. In everything she does, Ginny believes in dignity, decency, and transparency for all.
