Court Square to Re-open

The Court Square Pilot Pedestrian Plaza is wrapping up and the City is preparing to reopen Court Square Thanksgiving week. The pilot project was implemented with funding from MassDOT Shared Streets Program to “test drive” aspects of the Court Square conceptual design developed in 2017 under the Massachusetts Downtown Initiative (see: Court Square Pedestrian Plaza Presentation ( This pilot helped the City identify issues that could affect the final design of the project. The City welcomed (and certainly did receive!) comments and feedback. In early 2022, the City intends to hold a community design process (aka “charette”) to consider the feedback and comments from the pilot project and to advance to the next phase of design.

Weather willing, on November 24th, the City DPW staff will make the following changes to re-open Court Square (see Map):

  • Remove the temporary planters and street furniture.
  • Re-establish one-way southbound only traffic on Court Square from Main Street to Bank Row.
  • Re-establish short term, handicap and loading zone parking spaces on Court Square
  • Establish all access to City Hall/Church/Funeral Home rear parking thru Court Square or via the alleyway near Veterans Memorial Park. (no turns from Bank Row into the south end of Court Square will be permitted).
  • Narrow the Court Square travel lane
  • Install new stop sign on Court Square at intersection with Newton Place.

The Court Square pilot project is one of several initiatives underway in downtown Greenfield as the City strives to make progress on the goals set out in Sustainable Greenfield Master Plan. In addition to the Court Square pilot, the City is advancing other efforts to enhance the vibrancy and vitality of our downtown. Two new major public investments (the Library and the new Fire Station) showcase a City that is investing in its future. The Crossroads Cultural District recently was renewed and expanded, strengthening our ability to capitalize on Greenfield’s cultural resources. Funding has been awarded to upgrade the Fiske Avenue Pocket Park, install a skateboard park, and to plan for other streetscape improvements in advance of the City’s preparation to reconstruct Main Street under the Commonwealth’s Transportation Improvement Program. With all this activity in the works, the City will launch its effort to update the Downtown Revitalization Plan in early 2022.
