Mayor Roxann Wedegartner delivered the following remarks at Greenfield's 2022 Memorial Day ceremony:
"I begin today with a quote from Abraham Lincoln. 'America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedom, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.' So we gather today to remember and show our respect for those men and women who did not falter, they answered the call to serve and to protect our freedom and to help ensure it for others. They deserve every measure of gratitude we can give them.
"Although we are here to honor those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom and justice, I also want us to acknowledge the daily contributions of those of you who returned. You returned to live your lives in service to your communities in order to bear witness to the sacrifice of those who died on the battlefield beside you. Among you are nurses, doctors, teachers, and police officers. We owe you all our gratitude and respect.
"Respect is in short supply these days. With so much violence and negativity permeating our daily lives, it’s hard to find that gratitude that’s needed to sustain ourselves rather than destroy ourselves. But it’s there. If we open our eyes, we can see it in those individual acts of others who live their lives with purpose. Let’s leave here today with a renewed commitment to honoring our fallen soldiers by finding the common ground with others that helps us sustain, rather than destroy our nation, our community."
