Green River Swimming and Recreation Area Closes for Season on August 22, 2022

Green River Swimming and Recreation Area will be closed early for the season. As of Monday, August 22, restrooms, concessions, and river use will be closed for the season. The playground and park amenities will still be available for public use.

The park was closed for swimming due to suspected parasites on July 26, 2022, and the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia was confirmed on July 29. The city’s Recreation Department and Health Department have been working closely with Massachusetts Health Officials. Retests have revealed the continued presence of the parasites, and we have been advised by local and state health officials to delay additional testing until significant rainfall flushes the river, and this has not occurred due to continued drought.

On August 10, the State issued a Level 3 Critical Drought Designation for the area. This designation remains in effect.

Recreation Director Christy Moore says, “I want to thank the community for their patience, and thank our hardworking staff for hanging on with us this summer. Hopefully, Mother Nature will be kinder in 2023!”
