2022 Leaf Collection

The Greenfield Department of Public Works announces the following options for disposal of leaves by Greenfield Residents:

1. Home and business owners are reminded that it is a violation of the City’s bylaws to rake or blow leaves onto the tree belt or into the street. The problem is that the leaves will plug the storm drains and cause drainage problems during storm events. Additionally, in winter, the decayed leaves will be pushed back up onto the lawn by the plows, creating a worse situation than if the leaves had been properly picked up initially.

2. Leaves can be brought to the Greenfield Transfer Station compost pile without charge. Leaves must be either loose or in compostable paper bags. (If brought in plastic bags then they must be emptied and bags taken.) Transfer Station hours are Tuesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturdays 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Saturdays from January 15 to March 15 7:30 a.m. to noon).

3. Another option is to start your own leaf composting pile in your own backyard. It’s easy to do and it creates soil enriching compost for gardening. Please check out the Department of Public Works website at www.greenfield-ma.gov to obtain the Home Composting Guide or to be mailed a flyer, please call 772-1528. Compost bins are available at the Transfer Station for $25.

4. Please call 772-1528 to schedule to have your leaves picked up curbside in front of your house for a $10 prepaid fee for up to 20 compostable paper bags. All curbside leaves and grass clippings must be in compostable paper 30-gallon bags. The curbside collection is on Fridays by appointment from November 4 through December 2, 2022.

For any other questions or to arrange for curbside leaf collection, please call 772-1528 or visit our website at www.greenfield-ma.gov.
