Greenfield Complete Streets Prioritization Plan

FOR RELEASE:           January 23, 2016

GREENFIELD, MA – The Greenfield Department of Planning & Development is hosting its first of two public meetings regarding the new Complete Streets Prioritization Plan from 6:00-8:00pm on Monday, January 30th (snow date January 31st) at the Planning office located at 114 Main Street in Greenfield. The Town is working with Alta Planning + Design and Watson Active to develop and prioritize a list of projects to make Greenfield’s streets safer for all modes of travel.  This study is fully funded by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT).

Maureen Pollock, the Town’s Assistant Planner said the effort follows the Town’s Sustainable Master Plan, adopted in 2014 and the Town’s Complete Streets Policy, adopted in 2016. According to MassDOT, “A Complete Street is one that provides safe and accessible options for all travel modes - walking, biking, transit and vehicles – for people of all ages and abilities.” The purpose of the meeting is to gather input from the public about possible locations for projects that will improve bicycling, walking, transit access, and the overall safety of Greenfield’s streets.

The Plan could incorporate projects such as providing bike lanes that connect existing shared-use paths, residential neighborhoods, and downtown, to schools and parks; and fill in gaps within the sidewalk network and improve safety at crosswalks.

A second public meeting will be scheduled in the spring to gather feedback on draft project ideas before finalizing the plan. The plan is expected to be complete in June 2017. Once it’s finalized, the Town will become eligible to receive up to $400,000 in funding from MassDOT for implementing projects identified in the plan.
