Bicycle Racing Returns to Greenfield with the Greenfield Criterium on June 19th, 2016
Greenfield, MA May 27, 2016 – Bicycle racing will return to downtown Greenfield for the first time in over 25 years. On Sunday, June 19th amateur and professional riders from across New England will gather for the Greenfield Criterium - a day of criterium-style racing and spectating. Hosted by the Back Bay Cycling Club in collaboration with the Greenfield Recreation Department, the Greenfield Criterium will begin at 9:00AM with the amateur events. Racing will continue throughout the day, concluding with the elite women’s and elite men’s races at 1:45PM and 3:00PM, respectively.
Criterium racing is an all-American style of bicycle racing involving laps of a short, technical course. In this case, the Greenfield Criterium will travel clockwise around Church, High, and Main Streets before making the final turn for the finish line on Franklin Street. At just about one kilometer and with four 90-degree turns, the race represents a classic criterium course set against the backdrop of downtown Greenfield. Course closures will begin at 8:00AM on June 19th, and roads will re-open to traffic at 4:00PM at the conclusion of the final race.
Police and course marshals will be stationed around the course and at all intersections to manage traffic flow in and out of the course while racing is ongoing. Traffic will be allowed onto the course on a limited basis for residents while racing is ongoing. A temporary parking ban will be in effect for the entire course, including portions of Main Street, Franklin Street, Church Street, and High Street. Residents and visitors driving through the area are encouraged to use posted detours to avoid delays on race day. The course will remain open for pedestrians and spectators who should use caution when entering the roadway and follow the instructions of police and course marshals throughout the day.
Remembered only by long-time residents and veterans of the sport, bicycle racing is not new to Greenfield. Last held in 1989, the bicycle racing returns to Greenfield in 2016. The return of bicycle racing to Greenfield strengthens the reputation of the Pioneer Valley as a hotbed for top-quality cycling. Quietly but surely, a strong community of cyclists have laid the groundwork to put the Pioneer Valley on the map for cyclists around the country. Home to national champions, professional development teams, and high-caliber events alike, western Massachusetts has become a destination for American cyclists seeking an active and supportive community, not to mention some of the most scenic and challenging terrain in the country. Back Bay Cycling Club and the Greenfield Recreation Department are excited to revive this long-lost race and look forward to an excellent day of fun and racing on June 19th.
