Chickens & Roosters

Greenfield does allow the keeping of chickens anywhere in the city, however roosters are restricted to certain areas, and the number of chickens also varies by location.

Our zoning ordinance allows a resident to have up to 10 chickens (no roosters allowed) on parcels of land five acres in size or fewer. There is no limit on chickens or roosters on land greater than five acres in size. A special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals is required to have more than 10 chickens, a rooster, or any other farm animals on land five acres or fewer in area.

If you have questions on these rules, contact the Planning Department.
